Classes held on Wednesday mornings from 10.30am to 11.30am in the Caerketton Hall.
Chi Gung is an ancient exercise form similar in Chinese
culture to the Yoga of the Indian sub-continent. It is sometimes spelt Qi
Gong or Kung but always pronounced with a "chee."
The emphasis is on connecting the mind and body,
calming the former and energising the latter. To achieve this a range of
exercises are undertake prior to meditation and prayer followed by martial
arts (such as Kung Fu or Tai Chi) or dance. These techniques can assist
those recuperating from illness or who have chronic conditions such as
high blood pressure, bronchial conditions or rheumatic complaints.
During the Cultural Revolution the practice of Chi Gung
was discouraged as a backward superstition, however, it is now practiced
in Chinese hospitals and public parks for young and old alike. The
benefits to body and mind are widely acknowledged. In the West the form of
Chi Gung that found favour was Tai Chi with its greater emphasis on
relaxed and effective posture and movement.
Chi Gung is also a tonic for those who enjoy good health
once described to me as a "gentle massage of the internal organs." I've
taught Chi Chung for 10 years and have seen the benefits first hand. I
hope I'll have the opportunity to welcome you to our classes.
