The Church exists for the benefit of members and
non members alike. We welcome people to
join us for any of the many activities that take place in our new church
centre throughout the week as well as to our
services of worship held on a Sunday.

Fairmilehead, "a fair mile from the
city of Edinburgh," was little more than a few scattered houses in the
1930's when the Church of Scotland thought that it was important to
establish a church in this area of new development. Its goal was realised in
1938 when the church was opened, the very first of the new 'church extension
churches' to open its doors.

Between then and now there have been
many changes, not least in the size of the community which today has over
12,000 people.
The
'church at the crossroads' has always
played an important role in the life of the community from its beginnings as
a wooden hut to the new church centre development which was opened in 1998.
Today we have a number of rooms and halls with easy wheelchair access, a
modern kitchen and toilets and improved provision for children, toddlers and
babies including a baby changing area. A nursery school operates within the
premises with a proven history of excellence for over thirty years; indeed
the nursery is very often the first point of contact people make with the
church in our area. Groups also exist for mothers and toddlers and there are
a whole range of activities for children, some run by the church, some not.
A modern hymn says "we have no mission but to serve" and Fairmilehead exists
in order to serve the people of Fairmilehead and beyond in different ways.
Through the professional ministry of the church we organise a programme of
visitation to those in homes and hospitals, conduct weddings, baptisms and
funerals, offer bereavement counselling and
generally make ourselves available to those in need. As a congregation we
have a lively commitment to Christian Aid and to helping homeless people in
conjunction with the Little Sisters of the Poor.

For many people the focal point in
the church's week is the Sunday services - at the moment there are two
regular morning services and other, occasional, special services at other
times and days of the week. There is also a lively Young Church which meets
at the time of the first morning service. A creche is also available at this
time. Between services there is an opportunity to chat to friends and
members over a cup of tea or coffee and special 'charity lunches' are held
from time to time following the later service. (Photo; coffee with friends

....and finally
If you are a member of the Church of Scotland and have recently moved
into the Fairmilehead area we would like to hear from you. If you are
thinking about joining the church then new members classes are held twice a
year in the Spring and Autumn. Details of all of the above can be obtained
here or through the Church
Office.
Very best wishes to you all,
John Munro,
Minister.
[For the record the Church is a congregation of
the Church of Scotland. Its Government is Presbyterian and is exercised
through Kirk Session, Presbytery and General Assembly. (Articles Declaratory
of the Church of Scotland.)]
